General Questions About the Survey
What is the Academy/AAOE Benchmarking Survey?
The Academy/AAOE Benchmarking Survey is a web-based survey to help you measure financial performance and practice efficiency.
What types of practices are eligible to participate?
In order to complete this benchmarking survey and access the subsequent reporting tools, you must be reporting data for an ophthalmology practice. For this survey, we are defining an ophthalmology practice as a privately owned practice consisting of one or more physicians.
The following organizations may not complete the benchmarking survey:
- Integrated Delivery System (IDS)
- Independent Practice Association (IPA)
- Management Services Organization (MSO)
- Physician Practice Management Company (PPMC)
- Hospitals
- Free Standing ambulatory Surgery Centers
- Medical school facility practice plans
- Medical school clinical science departments
- Any other type of organization that owns, manages, or provides services to medical practices
Why should I participate?
Benchmarking is a critical tool to help practices measure efficiency and areas for improvement. The AAO/AAOE benchmarking project will give practices accurate information that will allow comparison to national averages.
The baby boomers are beginning to retire which is expected to increase the demand for services in the coming years, and that will mean that practices will need to focus on operating at peak efficiency in order to handle the increased demand.
